CSR Utilizes Silver Peak's Network Optimization Solution to Improve Application Performance Over Distance

January 07, 2013

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

With its corporate headquarters in Cambridge, U.K., RF semiconductor manufacturer CSR (News - Alert) relies heavily on centrally hosted services that require fast, reliable access at anytime from anywhere in the world. To help improve the performance of interactive applications between the company’s network of global offices across 10 countries, CSR deployed Silver Peak Systems’ software based acceleration.

According to Silver Peak (News - Alert), by installing its software-based acceleration at all 26 of its sites, covering around 2,100 employees across 10 countries, CSR has reduced network costs substantially and reduced network traffic significantly, ensuring a consistent application experience for all employees.

With design and engineering talent spread across the globe, CSR needed to improve application performance over distance. In fact, CSR needed to optimize the performance of various interactive applications, including Perforce, Microsoft (News - Alert) file services (CIFS), and engineering design tools using computer aided design (CAD).

Per CSR’s explanation, the company evaluated a variety of WAN network optimization vendors before selecting Silver Peak’s Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) software. It was added to the mix just four weeks before the end of the assessment process, according to CSR.

In a statement, Mark Taylor, senior support analyst at CSR, said, “With our business relying so heavily on instant access to centrally saved data, it is imperative that we minimize the amount of graphical data delivered across the WAN.” He added, “The applications we use are essential to the quality of our work. Therefore, it is crucial that they are not impacted by other activities taking place in the same office, for example, another user downloading a large file over FTP. We tested a lot of solutions, with Silver Peak winning on performance. In fact, Silver Peak outperformed its competitors in 95 percent of the tests we ran.”

Silver Peak’s VXOA software was selected specifically for its excellent performance capabilities, in particular the deduplication algorithm and ability to manage the devices from a single pane of glass. It uses real-time network optimization techniques to improve application performance over distance. This includes Network Acceleration to overcome WAN latency, Network Integrity to correct packet delivery issues and prioritize time sensitive traffic, and Network Memory to maximize WAN bandwidth utilization.

“Since deploying Silver Peak’s software, we are not only seeing significant improvements in application performance and file transfers, but we have saved administrative overhead by eliminating the need for dedicated proxy servers for our video streaming,” continued Taylor.

Adding to Tailor’s statement, Silver Peak’s VP marketing Jeff Aaron stated, “CSR is a good example of how the success of business is increasingly dependent on seamless data mobility over distance.” He continued, “In order to achieve this, organizations need to ensure that the underlying network infrastructure is able to cope with large volumes of traffic being used by distributed employees.”

A recent market report from Strategy Analytics (News - Alert), shows that the DPI market will exceed $2 billion by 2016. As per this report, key drivers for this growth include user experience, cost reduction, the new service delivery in mobile networks, and network packet brokers.

In a statement, Susan Welsh de Grimaldo, director, Mobile Broadband Opportunity service at Strategy Analytics, commented, “Better quality of experience (QoE) for mobile data services requires better tools in the network, with more granular visibility into traffic flowing over networks. DPI is becoming a strategic weapon for mobile operators as they seek to control and monetize mobile data traffic, and leading vendors are stepping up to meet evolving operator needs.”
