New Network Packet Brokers Effectively Monitor Complex Networks

December 04, 2012

Today’s networks carry a wide array of application traffic, each with its own performance and security implications as well as network speeds. In addition, load factors are also increasing. Without application-aware network packet brokers in place, these factors can lead to the overloading of existing monitoring equipment and early obsolescence of legacy equipment with slower interface speeds.

To help U.K. operators effectively monitor their increasingly complex networks, Phoenix Datacom has unveiled two powerful new network packet brokers (NPB’s) manufactured by VSS Monitoring to be distributed to the U.K. market.

The new vBroker 200 and vBroker 300 appliances are Level 3 NEBS compliant and deliver the industry’s richest set of packet optimization features, including traffic filtering/grooming, media and rate conversion, and offloading of packet processing to increase the capacity and efficiency of connected monitoring systems.

While the vBroker 300 series provides the industry’s highest capacity in a 1RU format – 560 Gbps – and up to 56 ports per appliance, the vBroker 200 series delivers the flexibility of a modular chassis in compact 1RU or 2 RU form factors. Also, vBroker 200 is VSS' first fully modular, scalable family of packet brokers that bridge the gap between Gigabit and 10G networks. And high density vBroker 300 bridges the gap between 10G and 40G networks.

In a statement, John Carson, managing director of Phoenix Datacom commented, “These solutions allow our customers to meet stringent and increasing monitoring requirements and, at the same time, save money by making much better use of existing monitoring systems “Customers can effectively connect multiple monitors to a single network and ensure that only relevant traffic is securely passed to each device,” added Carson.

According to Phoenix Datacom, the new vBroker packet brokers are fully compatible with vMesh, the mesh architecture from VSS Monitoring (News - Alert) that can seamlessly interconnect up to 256 VSS Monitoring NPBs and more than 10,000 ports, delivering the greatest scalability and link-layer visibility currently in the space.

The supplier claims that customers gain unparalleled scalability to capture and broker packets across the largest networks to centralize monitoring and security, resulting in more efficient capital investments and fewer resources needed to manage them.
