Mellanox Intros New 12-port Switch System to FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Solutions Line

November 20, 2012

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Mellanox (News - Alert) Technologies recently introduced new 12-port non-blocking fixed switches to its line of end-to-end FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand interconnect solutions.

Belonging to the Mellanox SX6000 series of FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand switches, the new 12-port non-blocking fixed switches include fabric management capabilities to ensure the highest fabric performance.

Gilad Shainer, vice president of market development at Mellanox Technologies, said the new 12-port FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand switches provide small-scale storage, enterprise and embedded systems with the best cost-performance interconnect solution.

This solution is ideal for small-scale storage environment with extremely low latency, high throughput and highest resiliency using two ½ 19’’ boxes in a single RU – each with redundant power supplies.

“These new switches enable richer port-count variety for system builders and IT managers to leverage from FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand for higher application performance at a smaller scale,” Shanier added.

The 12-port switch series uses Mellanox’s sixth-generation SwitchX-2 InfiniBand switch device, the SX6012 (managed) and SX6005 (externally managed), to provide up to 12 56Gb/s full bi-directional bandwidth per port.

These InfiniBand adapters and switches are very useful for connecting data center servers and storage, delivering high throughput, low latency and world-leading applications performance.

It can also be used by small departmental or back-end storage clustering with high application performance needs.

Recently, Mellanox Technologies rolled out a new series of long distance InfiniBand switch solutions called MetroX, extending InfiniBand from a single-location data center network to a high-performance technology for local, campus and even metro applications.

Mellanox MetroX switches comprise a cost-effective, low-power, easily managed and scalable solution that enable connections between data centers deployed across multiple geographically distributed sites, extending InfiniBand and RDMA beyond local data centers and storage clusters.
